2024 Jiuding Scholarship Program Public Announcement

Founded as a charitable organization in 2011 by a group of well-established Chinese Canadians, entrepreneurs and professionals, the Jiuding Scholarship Foundation (the Foundation, formerly known as the Montreal Jiuding Club) is dedicated to award scholarships to the next generation of Canadian leaders of Chinese heritage.  

Through an intensive and rigorous selection process, scholarships are granted to academically gifted, well-rounded students pursuing a degree/diploma at a recognized university throughout Canada. At present the Jiu Ding Scholarships are offered to students enrolled in Quebec and Ontario universities. Scholarship programs primarily target students pursuing their first undergraduate degree/diploma, but in the province of Ontario, scholarship programs for students of law and medicine at the graduate level are also available.


Program A:  Jiuding Award – Province of Quebec

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Candidate must be enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s degree or undergraduate certificate program of study of at least 6 months at a recognized university or post-secondary institution for the 2023-2024 school year.
  2. Candidate must be studying in the Province of Quebec, or if currently studying in other provinces (excluding Ontario) in Canada or overseas, must have resided in the Province of Quebec for a period of 12 consecutive months prior to their enrolment.
  3. Candidate must be of Chinese descent (At least 1/4 ethnic Chinese descent, inclusive of ethnic minorities from China, Chinese language skill is encouraged).
  4. Candidate must provide official transcripts for the most recent three semesters. Cegep transcripts will be accepted for 1st year students. Preference will be given to applicants with a higher GPA when other criteria are comparable.
  5. Priority consideration will be given to students who demonstrate active and strong involvement in school and/or community activities and services and/or in extra-curricular activities.   

A scholarship of $6,000 will be awarded to one winner of each of the following categories: 

  • Medical Program Award
  • Law Program Award
  • Science, Engineering and Technology Award
  • Commerce and Economics Award
  • Art and Sociology Award
  • Other Discipline Award 

Program B:  Jiuding Award – Province of Ontario

Applicants must meet all the conditions listed below to be eligible: 

  1. Candidate must be enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s degree (or Graduate degree program for Medical and Law students) or undergraduate certificate program study of at least 6 months at a recognized university or post-secondary institution for the 2023-2024 school year. 
  2. Candidate must be studying in the Province of Ontario, or if currently studying in other provinces (excluding Quebec) in Canada or overseas, must have resided in the Province of Ontario for a period of 12 consecutive months prior to their enrolment.
  3. Candidate must be of Chinese descent (At least 1/4 ethnic Chinese descent, including ethnic minorities from China, Chinese language skill is encouraged).
  4. Candidate must provide official transcripts for the most recent three semesters,high school or Cegep transcripts will be accepted for 1st year students. Preference will be given to applicants with a higher GPA when other criteria is comparable.

A scholarship of $6,000 will be awarded to one winner of each of the following categories for Ontario Province Awards: 

  • Medical Award (Graduate student)
  • Law Award (Graduate student)
  • Science, Engineering and Technology Award (Undergraduate student)
  • Commerce and Economics Award (Undergraduate student)
  • Art and Sociology Award (Undergraduate student)
  • Other Discipline Award (Undergraduate student)

Awards Application and Selection Process:

Complete the application form and submit the application package at https://forms.gle/BqAHhg3bd9We5ho28  by May 31st, 2024 (the “Deadline”). 

Every year, an Independent Nomination Committee comprised of independent community leaders reviews the applications and nominates candidates for selection.  Members of the Foundation board will determine the award winners through interviews with the nominated candidates. 

Scholarship winners are announced and awarded during the annual gala, which brings together many guests from the business, academic and government communities. The Jiuding Scholarship is an important recognition from the Chinese community.

Award application packages MUST  contain the following documents:  

1. A short cover letter including the applicant’s contact information (address, phone and email) and specifying the category of award to which the applicant applies;  

2. Proof of full-time registration at a recognized university for the 2023-2024 school year;

3. Official transcripts of the applicant’s last 3 semesters; 

4. An essay in English or French (800 words maximum). The theme for the essay is: A) 2023 marked the 100th anniversary of the Chinese exclusion act in Canada. Over the last century, while Chinese people have flourished in Canada, we have also navigated significant challenges. Looking forward, what measures and/or initiatives would you propose to strengthen the position of Chinese people in Canada?

B) What is the social impact cause that you are most passionate about, and how do you aspire to move the dial in this space? 

Special consideration will be given to essays that are well-written with original and creative thinking, deep reflections and constructive ideas, as well as real-life examples.

5. A resume outlining the applicant’s education/experiences, and his/her participation in social/community services as well as in extra-curricular activities; and,

6. A letter of reference.

7. A brief video (up to 1 minute) in landscape format, introducing yourself, explaining why you are applying for the Jiu Ding Scholarship, discussing your aspirations, and highlighting your personal traits.

Please note that the Independent Nomination Committee will only review complete application packages submitted before the deadline. Recipients of the Jiuding Scholarships in prior years are not eligible for application. 

Nomination and Selection Criteria

  1. Quality and creativity of the candidate’s application (the cover letter and essay provided by the candidate will be subject to a thorough examination); 
  2. Academic performance provided in the candidate’s transcripts, and/or outstanding achievements;
  3. Level of participation in social/community services and extra-curricular activities;
  4. Letter of reference; and,
  5. Interview performance should the candidate become a finalist.

 

The Foundation retains the right to interpret the rules and criteria for awarding scholarships and to determine the eligibility of applicants at its own discretion.
